Gift idea for the home chef: Emile Henry Salt Pig

A salt pig is a good example of one of those things you didn’t think you needed … until you had one. What is it? Well, it’s just an earthenware (at least it should be) holder, usually shaped like a giant macaroni, designed to hold (surprise) salt.

Why? What’s wrong with a salt shaker or a bowl.

Truthfully, nothing. However, when you use Fleur de Sel and Sel Gris (or other coarse salts – we found a great deal on Fleur de Sel @ $14 for a pound), you will quickly find that there is a great deal of clumping – especially in the summer months and more humid days.

And those salts are so good.

So, the salt pig (like the Emile Henry one here) is unglazed inside, so the moisture gets absorbed by the ceramic.

Plus, it looks cool. And the large mouth is easy to reach into, grab a pinch, and sprinkle it over whatever delicious conconction you’re cooking up.

Oh, and the pig in salt pig is short for pigge, an old English word for earthenware.
