It’s time. You know you (or your loved one) has wanted to do this for a long time coming. That’s right, make your own beer. Unlike distilling which is actually illegal, it is perfectly legal to make and drink your own beer (provided you are 21). It may not be easy, per se, but it’s not that hard. You boil some water, stir in some malt and add a dash of hops (this wonderful-smelling concoction is called wort). Let the wort cool, add more water and pour into a large fermenting container. Add yeast and put on a special cap that allows the release of air but doesn’t let any in (this keeps a CO2 layer to protect bad yeast from growing). This last step should be done correctly – if not, you can either have spoiled beer OR wake up one morning (as I have) to a ceiling (and the rest of the room) covered with sweet beer juice.
Mmmm. Beer juice.
Seven Bridges Cooperative offers a number of organic brewing kits – this one has EVERYTHING you need, including a book on how to make beer – others have just the malt and hops. The one pictured at left is an organic Nut Brown Ale, but they also have (all organic) a red ale, a porter, a stout, an India pale ale and more…
The key is keep everything clean. That’s really it.
Then you drink your own beer – and nothing is more satisfying. Plus this will be a handy trade to have in the aftermath of 2012. Think about it – you can trade beer for everything. Beer will be the new gold. You can quote me on that.
