Tubes. This old technology was basically murdered by the microchip which is faster, more efficient and more scalable. But there is something so cool-looking about them. They put to mind diodes and cathodes and anodes. In guitar amplifiers, they’re still the preferred technology because of the way they deliver a warmer tone.
The Nixie tube is made for displaying numerals. By encapsulating different numbers inside of a single tube, the tube can determine which number to display by sending it’s power to the correct one. Pretty simple technology, but it looks really cool when the tubes are grouped together embedded into a clock.
