Terrain is having a sale on 100% recyclable fiber cement – 25% off (enter promotional code PLANTER for discount).

These attractive planters are durable enough to withstand the harshest weather (sun, heat, frost, etc.) for years and years (fiber cement is used for house siding because of this durability), yet attractive enough to use inside.

Fiber cement makes for good planters because of there porosity, which allows for aeration and drainage of the soil.

The finish is a nice white (though turns grey when wet). Looks very natural and light. The pot pictured is $168 (pre-sale price), other pots run up to $488 (pre-sale).

Though they are advertised as “recyclable”, I’m not sure what exactly that means – it can be ground up and reconstituted as cement, I suppose…? But kudos for trying to be green. And I suppose their overall durability helps them to be somewhat green compared to other pots that break down and end up in landfills.

This little planter serves as a reminder that no matter what man does to pave paradise (apologies to Joni), nature will always keep growing up and around us. The single-minded nature of plants: grow and thrive.

Designed to look like a manhole or shower drain, sprouts will come up through the drain. Concrete base with a steel lid. A simple and interesting take on the traditional planter.

La Gardo Tackett is a potter/designer who was based in Southern California (at least his studio is here). His “architectural pottery” featuring pots that were stacked on one another, situated in metal scaffolding and otherwise architected was all the rage in the 50′s, even having been featured in the World’s Fair in Brussels in 1958 where he received rave reviews from colleagues and critics alike. He made a series of eggheads that were apparently condom holders that were manufactured by Schmid International and sold mainly through Playboy magazine.

His stuff is generally difficult to find and usually one must peruse eBay and such places, but Velocity (one of our favorite place to find sweet stuff) has this planter in stock, which we think is pretty cool.

They also are having a sale until the end of January 2010: 15% off orders over $165.
