And of course, there’s the light. Compact fluorescents conserve energy, but offer enough light to illuminate a section of your garden or walkway.

Cool.

This little Grobal (and the even littler Grobal Baby) is made so that even the most seasoned plantards (apologies to Sarah Palin…oh, nevermind) like myself can stop killing plants. The reason being is that you can’t over or underwater your plants. You simply keep water IN the reservoir and the pot handles the rest by drawing water (and the accompanying nutrients) up to the plant.

It’s really quite simple. The company writes a bunch of stuff about the digital age and whatnot, but really it’s just capillary action. You remember from 6th grade “science” class. Osmosis and all that. Yeah.

But they look cool, too, and come in all kinds of colors like bubblegum and jet and mint and sky and snow. Mmm.

And they’re pretty cheap too: $25 for the big, $15 for the little.

Velocity Art and Design is currently featuring the Woolly Pockets series. These soft-sided planters come in a number of configurations that enable you to hang plants on walls, place them in large “meadows” or more traditionally styled “pots” (though they’re not really pots with soft sides).

They are made from recycled plastic and have breathable sides that lets moisture escape and aerates the soil. Any area of the planter that has contact with your house (bottom in “pots” or sides as in the wall hanging series) are waterproofed for protection.

The manufacturer (Woolly Pocket Garden Company) that produces these operates out of a solar powered office and is environmentally aware. Cool products from good companies…that’s what we like to find.

Update: Check out the video on authentacity.com about woolly pockets and their philanthropic enterprise, woolly school garden.

Planters range from $28 to $188 depending on size and configuration.

Turn your world upside-down with these planters from designer Patrick Morris. These planters are simple in design – they just hang from the ceiling or a shelf or whatever. But from a functional standpoint, they offer even more: the plants use 80% less water and they are self-watering, meaning even the most forgetful person can keep their plants alive and thriving. Just water once or twice a month.

Plus, these are a great way to add green in smaller spaces because they require no floor space.

Looks great with herbs, orchids, really, any old houseplant looks interesting upside-down.

Comes in x-small ($25), small ($35) and original ($75) as well as black and white.

Whatever you call it, we love it. We hope it sticks around for a little while because it seems to emphasize classic taste, artisan construction and nature along with science and new technology. In short, it’s design that matches our values.

Take these terrariums by Roost – they’re hand-blown recycled glass molded into giant bubbles, then sliced open. Inside you can put an array of dirt, plants, rocks and moss.
