Those that live and work in India (and other Asian countries like Thailand and Malaysia) are familiar with one of the handiest storage containers and lunchboxes: tiffins. Everyday, couriers in Asian cities transport tiffins filled with lunches – either from a caterer or their homes – to people in their offices. They are simply designed adn fully functional: stackable stainless steel canisters that can be clamped together with a handle. When you’re ready, you pop off the clamps and each container holds a delectable dish: rice pulau, okra with yoghurt, Gujarati cabbage or chicken tikka masala. Of course this could also be pasta, sauce and a salad…and of course, you’ll have to arrange for the courier yourself.
Tiffins are stainless steel, which makes for easy cleaning (dishwasher safe), heating (on the stove or in the oven/toaster oven) and storage. Plus, you don’t have issues with leaching plastics or disposable, landfill-consuming, tree-wasting containers. We’re actually a bit surprised these haven’t taken off more in the West. Yet.
This set by To-Go Ware is 3 tiers, includes a smaller vessel for salad dressing or condiments and the lid doubles as a plate. To-Go Ware products are fairly traded, so foreign workers are subject to decent working conditions and wages.
